The Superman Project- November, 2007
A couple of years ago a customer at one of my shows asked me if I would be interested in restoring a couple of small fiberglass statues of cartoon characters he had. I said yes and restored Roadrunner and Wile E.Coyote. Restoration involved sanding, cleaning and repainting.

Life was good and I continued on my merry way. Then early this year the customer's father called and asked if I would be interested in restoring two more cartoon characters. I reluctantly agreed and took on Batman & Superman. These two were MUCH bigger: each character was over 9' tall and took two or three people to move. Both had been exposed to the elements back East and showed a lot of signs of wear.

After many months Batman is done and has been returned to his owner... now it is time for Superman. Like I said, he is about 9' from toe to outstretched hand, is made of old fiberglass and has metal reinforcing inside. He has a big bracket on his foot and is intended to be mounted on top of a building as if he were launching himself into flight. His cape is removable and it also will need restoring.

So now my Super Hero Project co-conspirator and I have Superman in the garage/ studio and the sanding/ stripping process has begun. Here are pictures of what he looked like at the beginning of the project (November)... I will put up more pictures as we progress.

And for those of you with the strange sense of humor: "Yes, I am stripping Superman."
